The first steps towards realizing the full value of radioimmunoconjugates have been taken…

On the 31st January – 2nd February 2012, the World RadioImmunoConjugate Summit took place in Washington, DC. Bringing together the world’s largest radioimmunotherapy drug developers, antibody-based imaging specialists and most prominent academics, the meeting fuelled an intense discussion on how to promote the use of radioimmunoconjugates in the clinic and by big pharma. Hear what attendees had to say about the meeting:

Excellent – Congratulations!

Immunomedics

The quality of the speaker was superb. They represent the major world leaders in the science of medical radioimmunotherapy. The program was also comprehensive, focusing on each technical area of importance, which, taken together, composes the field. The intimate setting of the conference facilitated professional interactions and networking.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Very helpful and informative!

NIH

Best concentration of RIC experts.

Atlab Pharma

Excellent networking opportunity. Excellent exchange on science, clinical trials and economic challenges.

Arronax

Excellent program highlighting cutting edge work in the field. Innovative approach to meeting structure – networking and brainstorming activities were fun and useful.

Novelos Therapeutics

The World RadioImmunoConjugate Summit provided the perfect opportunity for solution providers in the isotope and antibody production space to showcase their technologies to industry and academia. The speed networking sessions and networking dinner allowed introductions to be made, solutions to be explained and deeper discussions to be undertaken.

The agenda was packed with the leading companies and academic institutions in this space including: Immunomedics, Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, Garden State Cancer Center, MSKCC, NIH, Peregrine Pharmaceuticals, Johns Hopkins University and many more

Here are some highlights of the recent meeting:

David Goldenberg, Founder & CSO of Immunomedics, gave a thought-provoking and insightful presentation on the history of radioimmunoconjugates, and the steps needed to be taken in order to promote their use. The talk really set the tone for the meeting, triggering a number of debates on how to encourage big pharma investment in the field.

Steven Fruchtman, CMO of Spectrum Pharmaceuticals, provided a full-blooded talk on the efficacy of Zevalin, providing facts and figures to back up his claims. Dr. Fruchtman also posed a number of questions for discussion as to why Zevalin still isn’t being prescribed more often by physicians.

Robert Sharkey, Director of Clinical Research at Golden State Cancer Center, captured the audience with a fascinating talk on Pretargeting using he “Dock and Lock” method, providing cutting-edge information on the use of recombinant humanized tri-Fab Bispecific antibodies to improve imaging and therapy of cancer.

George Sgouros, Professor of Radiology and Radiological Sciences at Johns Hopkins University talked at length about evolution (and the revolution) in modeling and dosimetry, and its application in radioimmunotherapy.

The interactive Panel Session on improving the image and promoting the use of radioimmunoconjugates sparked intense discussion throughout the audience as to what needs to be done. Everything from improving marketing and brand image of current RIT drugs to addressing the nuclear medicine licensing laws was addressed, with much more inbetween!

And not forgetting the Speed Networking Session. Enjoyed by all, this session enabled all attendees to meet and network. This stand out event provided the basis for numerous connections to be made, and formed a vital part of the meeting's communal atmosphere.

After listening to feedback from attendees, the 2nd World RadioImmunoConjugate Summit aims to continue building on the success of previous meetings by delivering an agenda that will focus on:

  • Understanding directly from physicians what they need in order to prescribe radioimmunotherapy more regularly
  • Addressing the regulatory requirements currently surrounding radioimmunoconjugate use both in the US and Europe
  • Hearing from patient advocacy groups as to how they can help promote the use of radioimmunotherapy in the clinic
  • Overcoming the requirements of big pharma companies to invest in radioimmunotherapy and antibody-based imaging
  • Combining imaging and therapy in a theranostic approach
  • Improving molecular imaging to give same-day results
